I’m still experimenting with ballast appearance, and have concluded this Fine grade is the right size for HO scale if you are doing close-up photography. Otherwise people say to mix in some Medium grade to break up the uniform appearance for realism. I tried Mod-Podge Matte on a section and it seemed to leave more of a blue-ish tone with the straight gray than the Elmers Gue-All solution I usually use. I also tried some artists acrylic matte medium (4x the price) which seemed about the same. The white glue solution may leave less noticeable “filleting” - that filling in of the spaces between the rocks, than the matte medium I just received some of the Mixed Gray also, and it looked very white for the East Coast limestone I’m going for, but when I wet it down it looked very good. I would suggest mixing in some other colors with the gray at least, depending on the region you’re modeling. Also, to get the ballast rocks off of the ties before glueing, tap the tops of the rails with a paint brush handle to vibrate them off and settle the ballast.
