Starting as far back as the late 1920_x0092_s railroads began to _x0093_piggyback_x0094_ over-the-road truck trailers on general service flatcars for customers. General Service flatcars were equipped with a combination of rub rails, jack connections, integral or detachable bridge plates, and _x0093_5th wheel_x0094_ mounts, and could carry either pairs of short trail­ers or a single 40_x0092_ trailer. The Atlas 50_x0092_ Flatcar with Trailers is typical of the general service flatcar conversions that ran from the 1940s through the 1970s.
