Why This Model Matters
The Santa Fe 2900 Class represents the
absolute peak of American steam locomotive development. These
engines were built without compromise—designed to move fast, heavy passenger trains
across long western mainlines. For modelers, the 2900 is more than a locomotive; it’s
a statement piece that defines an era.
This release combines museum-grade detail with real operating authority, making it
equally at home on a display shelf or leading premier passenger trains on a large
layout.
About the Prototype
Few steam locomotives match the sheer size, power, and presence of the Santa Fe 2900
Class. Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works between 1943 and 1944 for the Atchison,
Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, these 4-8-4 “Northern” locomotives were the
largest and most powerful passenger steam engines ever rostered by
Santa Fe—and among the most formidable steam locomotives built anywhere.
Today, six examples of the 2900 Class survive. Five are preserved for static display,
while No. 2926 was fully restored and returned to service in
Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2021. Now operating on the mainline once again, it holds
the distinction of being the
largest operating 4-8-4 steam locomotive in the world.

Preorders: Frequently Asked Questions
What is preordering and why would I want to do that?
What is preordering and why would I want to do that?
In the model railroading world, most products are made in limited runs. Manufacturers no longer produce large quantities to sit in warehouses. Instead, they announce new items and set a preorder deadline. After that date, production is based largely on the number of reservations received.
Preordering through Model Train Stuff guarantees your spot in line for these limited releases. When the products arrive, orders are filled in the order they were placed. The earlier you preorder, the better your chance of getting your items, even if there are shipping delays or shortfalls from the manufacturer.
