Description

About this model

ALCO delivered ten FEF-3s, Nos. 835 to 844, in December 1944. They rode on 80-inch drivers with 14-wheel centipede tenders and ran fast with UP's best trains: the Overland Limited, the Los Angeles Limited, the Portland Rose and the Challenger.

When the diesels took over, every FEF-3 but one was retired. No. 844 never was. It is the only steam locomotive a North American Class I railroad never retired. In 1962 UP gave the 844 number to a new GP30, so the steamer ran as 8444 until it got its number back in 1989.

This is #844 in Greyhound gray, 1989 to 1991, after the GP30 retired and the engine got its original number back. After the 1991 season it went into the shop for an overhaul and came out in black in 1996.

This version: Paragon4 Sound/DC/DCC with puffing smoke and whistle steam. Prefer to add your own decoder? See the DCC-Ready version.
