Following constructive collaboration between Volkswagen and Porsche, the prototype with an air-cooled Boxer engine was launched in autumn 1969. The four-cylinder vehicles with a 80 HP engine first came off the production line at Karmann in Osnabrück, Germany, while in Stuttgart Porsche itself manufactured the six-cylinder version with a mighty 110 HP.
