This Bluford Shops model is molded in three variations to simulate cars which have taken a beating in rough service - they have dented-out sides molded in their bodies! Lightly dented versions have multiple deflections in the side sheets above the floor line. The medium dented versions have the side sheets visibly puffed outward between the rivet lines as countless small dings to the inside faces accumulated and stretched the sheets into rough domes. The heavily fented versions also have the puffed-out panels but to a greater extent - plus many of the ribs have also been deflected outward. The concave dent detail on the inside faces matches the convex outside faces. Mill gondolas take a beating when they're loaded with scrap metal and finished structural steel thanks to the weight of the load and swinging loading cranes - they regularly hit the car sides from the inside. The only time a mill gondola has smooth sides is the day it's released from the factory. Boxcar addressed a need in the paper products industry. These cars went to work for Canadian National, hauling all sorts of paper commodities across Canada and parts of the United States. In the latter part of the 1990s, the cars were repurposed for pulp service, carrying bulk quantities of this product to and from processing plants. The wet pulp caused rotting issues inside the cars from the lack of ventilation. To rectify this, eight rectangular vents were strategically placed along the top and bottom of the sides. Most of the fleet had these vents by the early-2000s.

The 5277 boxcars feature a Plate C, 100-ton design with vertical exterior posts. Another spotting feature of these cars are the longer, squared-off end ribs. There are six of these ribs on both ends. It gives these cars a more rugged look! The door width is slightly wider than other 5277 boxcars, as well. This was done to accommodate loading of the various paper products these cars carry. It also helps for pulp loading as the bulk product can be quite large. A neat fact about the 5277s is they hold the title for largest quantity (500) of 100-ton, Plate C cars built after 1980. While outwardly similar at first glance to the SD60M, the D.C.-drive SD70M featured several external design refinements from the predecessor model. Battery boxes were relocated to the left-hand side walkway immediately behind the cab, a large, boxy forward traction motor blower housing replaced the angular version used on SD60s, the raised walkway duct on the left hand walkway was eliminated, and an intake for the rear traction motor blower on the left hand side of the carbody, directly under the rear radiator intake grill, was added.

Internally, the SD70 boasted improvements as well; a 16-710GB prime mover, rated at 4,000hp, was coupled to a new alternator design, the AR20. New D70TR traction motors were standard, and controlling all of this power and locomotive function was EMD’s new EM2000 microprocessor, which boasted more memory, twice the processing speed, and improved locomotive self-diagnostic capabilities compared to the processor suite used in the SD60. Even more revolutionary was the inclusion of EMD’s patented “Radial” truck design, the HTC-R. This design, which made its debut under EMD Demo SD60 #3, replaced the venerable HT-C truck, and is unique in its ability to shift, or “steer”, the wheelsets laterally through curves, resulting in greatly reduced wheelset and track wear, and coupled with the new D70TR traction motors and EM2000 microprocessor, greatly improved adhesion.

Continuing with previous practice, EMD built a set of Demonstrator SD70Ms, EMD 7000-7002, all equipped with the North American safety-cab (hence the “M” in their model designation), and decked out in an attractive gray, silver, and burgundy paint scheme. These units traveled all over North America, showing off the latest technology from EMD. Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railroad requested a 4300 horsepower version resulting in the SD75M. As production continued, EMD incorporated their new “Whisper Cab” design resulting in the SD75I. The updated cab SD75I was purchased by Santa Fe successor Burlington Northern and Santa Fe, Canadian National, and the Ontario Northland.

LEGENDARY LIVERIES:

What are Legendary Liveries?

Other features of these models include roadname-appropriate ends and brake wheel/ratchet details, mottled-rust painted interior, die cast metal floor, accurate decoration, metal wheels and body-mounted magnetic knuckle couplers.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0581/3410/2098/files/526_15-panel_mill_gondola_lightly_dented_sides_ready_to_run_188-52111_big__10496_1311b842-5a8c-4d13-b407-c9835e22c548.jpg?v=1785266648
in-stock-atlas-ho-20007826-acf-60-double-door-auto-parts-boxcar-master-detroit-toledo-ironton-25811-green-yellow-compass-logo
Atlas HO 20007826 ACF 60' Double-Door Auto Parts Boxcar, Master, Detroit, Toledo & Ironton #25811 (green, yellow, Compass Logo)

The Atlas Master HO Scale ACF 60' Double-Door Auto Parts Boxcar is based on large boxcars introduced by American Car and Foundry in the 1960s for auto parts service.
