The Broadway Limited HO Scale PRR Class PB70 Coach-Baggage Combine is a highly detailed replica of one of Pennsylvania Railroad’s most essential head-end passenger cars. As the name suggests, combines were dual-purpose cars that housed both coach and baggage sections under one roof—an efficient solution that eliminated the need for two separate cars.
These versatile cars were commonly found on small trains and branch lines, especially during the decline of passenger service in the mid-20th century. However, they also appeared as substitute equipment on well-known mainline trains like the Pennsylvania Limited, The Admiral, The Duquesne, The Red Arrow, and others.
Positioned at the front of the consist, PB70s were part of what railroads called head-end equipment—alongside locomotives, baggage cars, and RPOs (Railway Post Office cars). Some PB70s even served as coach-RPOs, with the mail section located ahead of the passenger seating.
The “PB70” classification stands for Passenger-Baggage, 70 feet long. These models are perfect for layouts set in the 1930s through the 1960s, and are loaded with prototypical features including:
-
Lighted, color-detailed interiors
-
Era-accurate PRR paint schemes
-
Magnetic knuckle couplers
-
Operation on curves of 18" radius or greater
Whether you're modeling Pennsy’s golden age or its gradual decline, these PB70 combines are an essential addition to your HO scale passenger roster.
