Broadway Limited Imports HO 7792 Class T1a 2-8-4 Berkshire with 4-Axle Tender Stealth, Boston & Maine #4002 (Standard DC)

Broadway Limited Imports is proud to introduce our new models of the Boston & Maine T1a and T1b 2-8-4 Berkshire locomotives.

In the 1920s, in stiff competition with the Boston & Albany, the B&M was seeking stronger motive power to handle the steep grades across Massachusetts. In 1925, the Lima 2-8-4 demonstrator A-1 completed test service on the B&A, and the Boston & Maine chose to evaluate it as well.

They received their initial order of 20 locomotives in 1928, followed by an additional five (designated Class T1b) in 1929. All 25 were equipped with a distinctive Coffin feedwater heater extending from the smokebox and trailing trucks with boosters.

The most noticeable difference between the T1a and T1b is the shape and size of the large sand dome atop the boiler. We’ve also modeled more subtle differences in conduit and piping. Another key distinction: T1a locomotives operated for much of their service lives with 4-wheel tenders, while the T1b locomotives were delivered with 6-wheel tenders.

Our models reflect these differences — T1a units feature a 4-wheel tender, and T1b units include a 6-wheel tender.

First Production Run Includes:

• Four fully decorated T1a locomotives
• Two fully decorated T1b locomotives
• One unlettered version of each class

Each model includes disk main drivers and Baker valve gear. Both the locomotive and tender are crafted from die-cast metal for maximum weight and pulling power.

• Paragon4 Series: Equipped with full sound, DCC, and synchronized lighting/smoke
• Stealth Series: No sound, DCC-Ready with pre-installed 8-ohm speaker

Stealth Series models operate on DC out of the box and are easy to upgrade with your DCC decoder of choice. Lighting is directional by default, and other lights are always on with track power (some lighting features may vary depending on the decoder you install).
